Participation trophies convey the message that “we are all winners” – just for showing up.
They may have a place in kids sports, but let’s be clear, there are no participation trophies for choosing to become an entrepreneur.
Making the jump from the “security” of a job with direct deposit, health insurance, and paid vacation is to be applauded for sure.
After all, it takes a lot of courage to go out on your own.
However, minutes after celebrating the arrival of your new glossy business cards and the launch of your state-of-the-art website, it starts getting real very quickly that being a small business owner sucks, if you don’t generate enough revenue to pay yourself.
(Ask me how I know!)
Entrepreneurs and small business owners who do make it and achieve high levels of success, do show up every day, and they also do several things correctly.
Here are 5 things that require much more than simply showing up.
Get good at these things, and you’ll be able to afford a real trophy for yourself!
- Create an in-demand product or service
- Create an amazing brand
- Consistently market your irresistible offer to the right audience
- Learn the difference between gross and net (see quote #10)
- Learn how to become an effective rainmaker – without cashflow, you have no business (see part #5)
