Love this quote from Jimmy Dean:
“I can’t CHANGE the direction of the wind, but I can ADJUST my sails to always reach my destination.”
Aside from the nautical reference, his advice could not be more true in both your private life and your entrepreneurial journey.
How many of us can remember sailing along in life, full speed ahead, only to hit a significant road block that lands you square on your behind?
Whether that was last year or 20 years ago, you somehow “adjusted your sails” and found a way to keep growing forward.
When I about 6 years into my first business, I was sharing with a mentor how distraught I was that I was carrying a huge debt and at 47 years old we had almost no retirement savings.
Clearly, I saw my boat taking on water.
That’s when my mentor said, “For heaven’s sake Jim, start bailing and start doing some smart things that will get your boat going faster.”
(He told me some other stuff, too.)
I’m paraphrasing what was essentially a “bitch slap” for me to end my personal pity party, and recognize what was in my control and what was not.
The direction of our life and business is far more within our control than we think.
Even a distraction as large as the Coronavirus is going to pass – eventually.
Look beyond the pictures of empty shelves and the negative political posts, and you’ll see it: smart entrepreneurs are ALREADY adjusting their sails to meet the winds.
Some entrepreneurs will emerge stronger and in a better position to move closer to their destination.
Sadly, some entrepreneurs will make foolish, rash decisions, focused on the current – and temporary – doom and gloom news, and the never-ending barrage of social media posts showing empty store shelves.
What do entrepreneurs want?
I recently conducted a survey of entrepreneurs and small business owners in my community.
Based on the current business climate – the results were not what I thought they would be!
They did NOT rubber-stamp the decisions I had pre-made.
What could I do?
I adjusted my sails.
How else can an entrepreneur keep moving toward the destination, while helping some other entrepreneurs along the way!
