Key Lessons Learned

  • Social media is like a parade-who would be in it? Where would you be? How often are you making appearances?
  • It takes a while to build a new network so focus on connecting with new people
  • Add value through content by sharing information and ideas that your audience will appreciate. If the content is good they will stick around and want to connect with you.
  • The idea on social media is to get people coming back and interacting
  • Spread your marketing across multiple channels on a consistent basis; social media, email marketing, blogging, direct mail, telemarketing, teleseminars and webinars as well as posting video on YouTube and blogs.
  • Social media platforms are changing all the time so keep on top of it
  • Don’t try to accomplish everything in one day, set small achievable daily goals
  • Social media is a good way to keep in touch with clients and get attention. Do it a few days prior to picking up the phone for full effect.

Live Event Social Media Management

  • Before you get to an event use social media to connect with attendees.
  • Make sure you know the event #hashtag (this will lead you to people at the event)
  • At the event add people you meet as you go (each evening is a good time otherwise they will forget you.)
  • Take photos of people at events and post them on Twitter and photo Facebook (tag the photos and use @mentions to show up on their page.)
  • Have a process or system for following up with people on a consistent basis

Facebook

  • Take time to develop the relationship (public and private) over time if you are meeting through Facebook
  • Make a list of people to follow up with over time. A spreadsheet works well and make notes as you reach out and contact. E.g send 10 private messages a day.
  • Think about what systems you can use on a daily basis to make contact that isn’t overwhelming. Always end with a question.
  • Consider who your audience is when posting on Facebook (how many friends they have)
  • Rick posts 6-8 times a day on personal pay and 3 times on business page with a mix of live and scheduled.
  • Hootsuite is good to pre-schedule and post a week at a time
  • Pre-scheduling frees you up to take the time to interact with your audience
  • Create TOMA (top of mind awareness) – Jump into conversations and find high profile people who are getting results as well as Facebook groups
  • Typically when you post anything political you’ll get 50/50 positive/negative response so it can be dangerous territory unless you want to be controversial
  • Don’t just post business things on your personal profile also post personal things to give a representation of who you are

Networking

  • You want to be a trusted advisor and a person who is a resource and solution oriented.
  • Use CRM, spreadsheets, Evernote to take notes and add into your customer database
  •  Use social media to find out what’s going on in peoples lives (find out their personality profile)

LinkedIn

  • Must have a strategy around it on how to find the people you’re looking for
  • Has great search tools for finding people
  • The more people you are connected to the more results you are going to get so grow your network
  • Use an email tool and use templates to send out messages to connect with people
  •  Focus on adding value and reference their profile e.g endorse skills
