Though content is king, the layout of your newsletter is just as crucial. Remember, first impressions are really important. You customer must first be attracted enough so that they will willfully go through every page. Here are a few tips to make your first interesting and worth reading:

  • Choose a color that will fit the character of your company. As much as you want the newsletter to be attractive, make sure that the colors are relevant to your company. Play with the color’s different hues so that it won’t look boring and it will still be reader friendly.  If there are parts of the newsletter that you wish your customer to focus on, then color can be your guide.
  • Plan your design very well, a design that is consistent. It is okay to be creative, but your newsletter must have this certain look that is recognizable all throughout. Consistency of the design such as positions of the articles, repeating graphic elements like page numbers makes your newsletter reader friendly.  It makes it easier for customers to find what they want.
  • Add relevant photos and graphics. Too many words can be boring. It would be more pleasing and interesting if photos are there to help. Sometimes, it only takes a photo and caption for people to understand everything they need to know about a certain topic.
  • Use graphical guides to direct your customers to important articles. Different font style, font size, bullet-points, and numbered section are few examples of graphical guides.
  • Make sure it adheres to postal services requirements. It would be a waste if you cannot send it because you didn’t meet the mailing requirements.

There are many things to consider in making your first print newsletter. If you still have a hard time going DIY in production, you can find help in many ways. You can have someone completely create the project for you or get a boost by making use of self-help newsletter templates. Remember, content may be good but your customers won’t know it until you get them interested in the material. So work on your layout as well.
