Live Your Dream Lifestyle

Since the release of my latest book, Just Say Yes – Create a Dream Business and Live Your Dream Lifestyle, I’ve done over 50 interviews on what it means to live YOUR dream lifestyle.

As it relates to Stephanie and I selling our home of nearly 30 years and living full time on a boat, I’m often asked if I ‘had’ any fears with this big life change.

“Had any fears” … as in past tense?!

Just Saying Yes to playing a bigger, bolder and faster game to live your dream lifestyle does not mean that you have mastered fear.

It doesn’t mean you are no longer susceptible to progress slowing “what ifs”.

It simply means that you’re focused on your goal – to live your dream lifestyle.

You’re so determined to make it a reality, you kick fear to the curb with as much gusto as you can muster.

Here’s a quick story about the fears I faced about living and working on a boat when I first started.

Stephanie and I loved the boat we chose.

As we approached the purchase date, the feeling we had was still, “Wow, this is going to be great!”

Until I looked up.

As part of the inspection process, the boat was pulled from the water on a big lift.

I remember vividly standing under the boat looking up, and feeling very small.

I thought to myself, “I can’t drive a boat this big, what are we thinking?”

Fast forward to April when we departed Maryland for Rhode Island.

We ventured for the first time ever into the Atlantic Ocean.

We were about 3 miles off the coast of New Jersey and the sun was shining, the seas were calm.

I thought – “Yeah, I got this, I am the captain of this big boat.”

Next, a mere 3 hours later the sun disappeared.

The wind and the waves both increased.

Even though this boat is nearly 50 feet, we were bobbing and weaving like a cork in a washing machine.

The smile on my face went away.

It was replaced with a serious look of concern.

As I watched for the next big wave, I could not believe they were hitting the bow with enough force to splash our windshield, which is about 20’ high.

My thoughts quickly turned from, “Yeah, I got this” to, “What the hell were we thinking?!”

An hour later we approached the entrance to New York Harbor and the wind and waves began to subside.

We were both excited to see Lady Liberty greet us, just like she’s greeted so many other weary travelers before us.

After we arrived in Rhode Island, for several days Stephanie and I would look at each other and ask, “Can you believe what we just did?!”

Honestly, we both felt alive, victorious, and pretty darn proud of ourselves for Just Saying Yes and taking on a big challenge that was so far outside of our comfort zone.

So why am I sharing this with you now? As an entrepreneur, you have to know two things.

  1. Fear is a daily part of your journey. It never goes away.  You just learn to kick its ass and not let it stop you from going on an amazing adventure. The alternative is to stay in your ‘safe and predictable’ life, talking about the how you are stretching yourself, creating big plans, changing your mindset to create the success you want – seemingly always getting ready to “pull the trigger.”
  2. All big growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Becoming financially independent so you can live your dream lifestyle requires big, bold action. Creating a Dream Business is not easy. It doesn’t happen without commitment, persistence and an investment of both time and money. I can tell you from personal experience, that desire – even a strong “big as the whole world desire” – does not get the job done. Most people have desire. Few people have the courage to move past desire and step up and do the hard things.

What started out as a personal big adventure has taught me a great deal about myself as an entrepreneur and how to live your dream lifestyle.

You need to always play a bigger, bolder, and faster game.

No matter where your business is, or how much success you’ve achieved, it’s just too easy to fall back into making safe and predictable choices.

This is true, even when you know deep down that big growth happens when you do big things.

What’s next for us?

While we’ve sold the boat and temporarily docked in an apartment, we’re plotting our next move.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m wondering what challenges we’ll face once we pick our next adventure.

So yes, even though I kicked fear’s ass before, there is still some level of fear in this ongoing (and still somewhat unknown) phase.

However, we already said yes once – and successfully kicked those fears to the curb.

I suspect I have a little more chutzpah to do it again.
