We’ve all heard the expression, patience is a virtue.

Well, I say, at least for entrepreneurs, impatience is a virtue.

High achievers do not wait for their dreams to come true – they make them come true.

Which brings up another expression:

Don’t wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.

Beside liking the obvious nautical theme, this expression also rings true, and I believe proves my point.

Sitting by, patiently waiting for something to happen, is not how you create success.

You set a goal, figure out the steps to make it happen, and then get into immediate and constant action, course-correcting as you move forward.

My wife, Stephanie, says that I have the patience of a gnat.

She also says I would have failed as a doctor, because I have no patience.

Okay, “Dad jokes” aside, I concede that can be a problem!

But when it comes to business, I look back on the last 20 years, and the success that I’ve been blessed with, and I conclude that my impatience – my desire to accomplish big things today, not tomorrow – has served me very well indeed.

There’s no doubt that acting swiftly can lead to some missteps, hence the expression, “course-correct as you move forward”.

As an entrepreneur, impatience can be a highly effective tool.

It can be the rocket fuel that propels you to faster results and higher levels of growth.

Patience can lead to procrastination, which can sabotage your chances of growing your Dream Business.

Patience can also give you a false sense that you have unlimited tomorrows, to make your dreams come true.

And, we all know that not even a single tomorrow is promised.

For example, if you want to write a book that will help you position yourself as an expert, you can take a year or two to make every single sentence dance off the page, and to the best of your ability, be 100% error free.

Or, you can write a darn good book in 2-3 months that will captivate an audience and help your business grow.

You may argue that the “slow and steady” approach might produce a better book.

Perhaps, by literary standards, you may be right.

However, I am a living testament that a well-written book (not perfect), in the hands of enough prospective customers, will do far more for your business that the perfectly written, error-free book, that is still in your computer.

Many entrepreneurs have heard the expression, that I first heard from marketing legend, and my greatest business mentor…

“Good is good enough!” – Dan Kennedy

This was the most liberating concept I had ever heard.

Good is good enough freed me from my own self-imposed restraints of moving forward with slow, deliberate speed, determined that my own first book would be a work of perfection.

After all, it had my name on the cover!

I feared that a single spelling or grammar mistake would doom my very existence!

In fact, that opposite has happened.

I wrote my first book in 18 months.

It was a tremendous boon to one of my businesses, No Hassle Newsletters.

Imagine my embarrassment, when I got an email from someone, saying that I had a dangling participle on page 117! My embarrassment faded somewhat when this same person thanked me for the great information that I shared in this “imperfect” book.

By the way:

My last several books were written and published in less than 60 days.

All have been big sellers – and very helpful to the growth of my business.

So, yes, there are places in life where patience is called for.

However, at least for me, growing a Dream Business is not one of them.

Don’t wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.
