On this special episode of Stick Like Glue Radio, I interview business coach, Rob Scott, about the importance of identity shifting for high achievers. Rob and I cover a lot of ground as it relates to achieving more success – don’t miss this powerful show!

Main Questions Asked:

  • Talk about imposter syndrome.
  • What are the 3 Fears?
  • Is the fear of criticism big for a lot of people?
  • Are there any shortcuts to initial success?

Key Lessons Learned:

Identity

  • All profound change relies on your identity or subconscious accepting whether or not that is real for you.
  • At the beginning of the journey, many people are wantrepreneurs that turn into entrepreneurs.
  • Our own self-concept has a lot to do with whether or not we are able to manifest our own futures.

Mindset

  • Your skill, talent, drive and ambition, moral compass, and ethics make up the engine that is your business, but it is your mindset that ‘fuels’ the engine.
  • Regardless of how good you are at something, if your mindset is tripping you up, you won’t achieve what you are meant to achieve.
  • Your emotional state is triggered by the meaning in your mind; therefore, mastery over meaning-making is a huge shortcut.
  • Self-talk, procrastination, and limiting beliefs are what holds us back.

Self-Sabotage

  • It doesn’t matter what access and abilities you have if you are going to self-sabotage and get stuck in some limit you think you deserve, or are limited by how much money you think you can make and the complexity you think you can handle.
  • You will do things that allow whatever you believe about yourself and whatever you think you deserve to manifest.
  • At some point, a huge amount of success becomes uncomfortable to us, and where that limit is will be the invisible unconscious cap.

The 3 Fears

  • The largest, most powerful part of your brain doesn’t care if you are happy or fulfilled. It just wants you to survive.
  • The following is why we procrastinate, resist taking action, and don’t do what we should when we know we want to.

1. Fear of Failure

  • This is a genetic aspect of humans, when failure used to be a matter of life or death.
  • It is scary to fail, and this is a safety mechanism.
  • We attach failure to our own self-worth, and think if we try something and fail, people will see us as incompetent or not worthy.

2. Fear of Success

  • Our subconscious is not set up to be wildly successful, but rather set up to remain safe and survive.
  • Success can be as scary as failure.
  • Many of us have a belief about our family of origin and that if we become too successful, we won’t be accepted by the people that love us.
  • Much of this is happening unconsciously.

3. Fear of Complexity

  • This is when things become too complex or overwhelming.
  • Fear of complexity is also the fear of the unknown.
  • This can be fear of losing control or having to control too much.
  • Most of our best work is done at the edge of our own complexity.

The Imposter Syndrome

  • This is being afraid you are going to be ‘found out.’
  • This is a built in fear that has to do with being authentic and trustworthy.

Fear of Criticism

  • This comes down to social acceptance.
  • There is a natural resistance to selling, because we have the idea that sales people are manipulative.
  • The act of authentically exchanging value with somebody becomes a worry of are they going to laugh at me.
  • Everything comes down to manifesting in your mindset to have you show up with confidence instead of natural and normal anxiety.

The Formula

  • Self-worth = Ability = Performance
  • If our self-worth equals our performance, then the cost of the performance becomes huge.
  • Separate the value from who you are.

Identity Shifting

  • This is where profound change happens.
  • If you feel differently, then you behave differently. If you behave differently, then you get better outcomes.
  • Your identity is shifting all the time and is an amalgamation of the stories you tell yourself.

Mastery

1. Awareness

  • Pay attention to what you are telling yourself.
  • Turn your focus to what you are actually thinking.
  • Write down what you are saying to yourself that is negative.

2. Challenge

  • Debate your beliefs and don’t entertain them as true.

3. Replace

  • Come up with useful thoughts.
